  An S-phenyl alpha-D-idoseptanoside donor was used in the selective preparation of a series of alpha-D-idoseptanosyl glycosides. Glycosylation of a methyl beta-D-glycero-D-guloseptanoside acceptor with the new donor constituted the first synthesis of a septanose disaccharide.
