A new thiaheterocyclisation of alditols involving bis-cyclic thionocarbonate derivatives as bielectrophilic intermediates is reported. The polyhydroxylated tetrahydrothiophene, tetrahydropyrane and thiepane rings from erythritol, D,L-threitol, D-arabinitol, D-mannitol and galactitol were efficiently obtained.
