    The solid catalyst component for polymerization of olefins comprising (a) a magnesium compound, (b) titanium tetrachloride, (c) a phthalic acid diester or a derivative thereof, and (d1) a hydroxy group-containing hydrocarbon compound having a specific structure or (d2) a mercapto group-containing hydrocarbon compound having a specific structure and the olefin polymerization catalyst can produce olefin polymers in a very high yield, particularly can produce propylene polymers in a very high yield, while retaining high stereoregularity.

    A method for producing a solid catalyst for olefin (co)polymerization includes bringing into contact with each other a magnesium compound, a tetravalent titanium halide compound, an organic compound represented the following general formula (1) R1k(C6H4-k)(COOR2)(COOR3)  (1) and an organic compound represented the following general formula (2) R4R5C═C (COOR6)(COOR7)  (2) wherein R1 is a halogen atom or an alkyl group, R2 and R3 are a linear alkyl group, R4 and R5 are independently an atom or group selected from a hydrogen atom, halogen, a linear alkyl group, a branched alkyl group a vinyl group, a linear or branched alkenyl group, a cycloalkenyl group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group, and R6 and R7 are independently a linear alkyl group, a branched alkyl group, a vinyl group, a linear or branched alkenyl group a cycloalkyl group, a cycloalkenyl group, or an aromatic hydrocarbon group.

    A method for producing a solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization includes bringing a magnesium compound, a tetravalent titanium halide compound, and an electron donor compound represented by a general formula (1) into contact with each other, reacting the mixture, washing the resulting reaction product to obtain a solid component, bringing the solid component, a tetravalent titanium halide compound, and an electron donor compound represented by a general formula (2) into contact with each other, reacting the mixture, and washing the resulting reaction product. (R1)kC6H4-k(COOR2)(COOR3)  (1) R4R5C(COOR6)2  (2) A polymer that exhibits high activity with respect to hydrogen, high stereoregularity, and high bulk density can be obtained using a catalyst including a solid catalyst component obtained by the method.

    Solid catalyst components and catalysts which comprise (a) a magnesium compound, (b) titanium tetra chloride, and (c) a phthalic acid diester or its derivative represented by a particular formula, can afford polymers of olefins in very high yield. Particularly, propylene polymers can be obtained in very high yield while retaining high stereoregularity. Moreover, they have high responsiveness to hydrogen.
