A General and Efficient Method for the Synthesis of Silyl-Protected Arenethiols from Aryl Halides or Triflates

An improved palladium-catalyzed synthesis of silyl-protectedarenethiols has been developed. This method is particularly useful because of its experimental simplicity, high generality and high level of functional group toleration. The first synthesis of enantiomerically pure [2.2]paracyclophane-4-thiol was realized employing this method.

Vinyl and aryl halides are efficiently converted, under Pd catalysis, with KSTIPS (1) to the corresponding silyl sulfides (2, 3). The naphthyl derivative was easily hydrolyzed to the mercaptan 4, or alkylated or alkenylated to provide unsymmetrical sulfides (5, 6).
