    White graft polymer dispersions in polyoxyalkylene polyether polyols are employed together with flame retardant compounds to prepare flame retardant polyurethane foams. The polymer dispersions employ less than 0.1 mole of induced unsaturation per mole of polyol mixture. improved processes for the preparation of these polymer dispersions employ either maleate or fumarate derived polyetherester polyols or polyetherester polyols prepared by reacting a polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol with a compound selected from the group consisting of maleic acid, maleic anhydride and fumaric acid and an alkylene oxide in the presence of salts and oxides of divalent metals.

    A low viscosity, stable graft polymer dispersion is prepared by polymerizing in the presence of a free radical initiator, from about 25 to about 70 weight percent based on the total weight of the dispersion, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or mixture of monomers, in a polyol mixture comprising (1 ) from about 25 to about 99 weight percent of a polyol containing from 2 to 8 hydroxyl groups and having an equivalent weight from 30 to about 200, (2) from about 1 to about 75 weight percent of a macromer containing induced unsaturation, said macromer comprising the reaction product of a polyether polyol having an equivalent weight from 100 to 10,000 with a compound having both ethylenic unsaturation and a group selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl, carboxyl, anhydride, isocyanate and epoxy or mixtures thereof. These graft polymer dispersions are useful for preparing polyurethane products.

    The integral skin polyurethane steering wheel is prepared by reacting (a) a mixture of a graft polymer dispersion in a polyol or a polyol mixture (b) an organic polyisocyanate selected from the group consisting of an isocyanate prepolymer prepared by reacting 4,4′-­diphenylmethane diisocyanate with a mixture of dipropylene glycol and a polyoxypropylene glycol having a molecular weight of about 420, a polymeric polymethylene polyphenylene polyisocyanate containing about 55 weight percent diphenylmethane diisocyanate, a 1:1 mixture of 2,4′- and 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and mixtures thereof, (c) a blowing agent, (d) a chain extender, and (e) a catalyst, surfactant and optionally flame retardants, fillers U.V. absorbers and other additives.

    Moldable energy absorbing rigid polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting a polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol containing therein a graft polymer dispersion, an alkylene oxide adduct of an aromatic amine in the presence of a crosslinking agent with an organic polyisocyanate. Alterna­tively, the aromatic amine may be replaced with an alkylene oxide adduct of pentaerythritol, ethylenediamine, α-methyl­glucoside, sorbitol and sucrose. The products are useful in various automobile body parts.

    The invention pertains to flame retardant poly­urethane foams prepared by the reaction of a polyoxyalkylene polyether polyol with toluene diisocyanate and a blowing agent wherein the flame retardant compound is selected from the group consisting of dicyandiamide, oxamide and biuret. The amount of flame retardant may range from about 25 weight percent to about 75 weight percent of the total composition.
