An undesirable flow of water from a highly permeable portion of, or a fracture in, a subterranean formation is terminated by the use of a hydraulic cement consisting of discrete particles having a particle size not greater than about 30 microns, the cement being in a slurry with a hydrocarbon liquid and a surfactant. The surfactant comprises an alkyl aromatic sulfonic acid of formula
where R₁ is a linear alkyl group of 12 or 16 to 24 carbon atoms, and R₂ amd R₃ are each a linear alkyl group of 12 carbon atoms.
