    Synthesis and Properties of Amphiphilic Photoresponsive Gelators for Aromatic Solvents
    摘要:
    A sugar-based photoresponsive supergelator, N-glycosylazobenzene that shows selective gelation of aromatic solvents is described. The partial trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene moiety allows photoinduced chopping of the entangled gel fibers to short fibers, resulting in controlled fiber length and gel-sol transition. The gelator is useful for the selective removal of toxic aromatic solvents from water.

  • Reactions of substituted 1,3-diphenyltriazenes with phenyl isocyanates. Catalysis and substituent effects

    Reactions of phenyl isocyanate with 12 monosubstituted and 15 symmetrical disubstituted 1,3-diphenyltriazanes have been studied in tetrahydrofurane at 25°C. The found rate constants correlate with the Hammett substituent constants, the slopes being - 1.206 and - 1.682 in case of the monosubstituted and the disubstituted compounds, respectively. Under conditions of pseudomonomolecular reaction catalysis by the products and that by the catalysts used in reactions of isocyanates with amines or hydroxy compounds have not been observed. Rates of reactions of 6 substituted phenyl isocyanates with the parent 1,3-diphenyltriazane have also been measured. In this case the found rate constants correlate with the Hammett substituent constants, the slope being +1.038. The results indicate that the reaction involves rate limiting formation of a six-membered cyclic complex which successively undergoes only a rapid reorganization of electrons.

  • MEASURING POVERTY AND DEPRIVATION IN SOUTH AFRICA

    This paper compares a standard expenditure‐based poverty measure with a specifically created composite measure of deprivation using household survey data from South Africa. While there is a strong overall correlation between expenditures and levels of deprivation, the correlation is much weaker among the worst‐off South Africans. In addition, the two measures differ considerably in the impact of race, headship, location (urban, rural), and household size on expenditure poverty versus deprivation. In general, the deprivation measure finds more Africans, rural dwellers, members of de facto female‐headed households, and members of smaller households deprived than expenditure poor. Only the differences in the effect of household size on poverty are sensitive to assumptions about equivalence scales. As a result, the two measures diverge greatly in identifying the poorest and most deprived sections of the population, which may have considerable consequences for targeting.
