  The invention provides fungicidal compositions containing benzyl-tris(aryl)- phosphonium salts of the general formula in which R¹ represents an optionally substituted alkyl or alkoxy group; R² represents a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl group; R³, R⁴ and R⁵ independently represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl or alkoxy group; and A⁻ represents an anion processes for the preparation of such compounds. Certain of the compounds of formula I are novel and the invention therefore also provides processes for the preparation of such compounds and their use as fungicides.
