    Curable compositions comprising a polyphenylene ether resin free of substituents which inhibit free radicals are combined with a polyvinyl unsaturated compound, such as poly(bisphenol-A fumarate) or divinyl benzene, and, optionally liquid polymerizable unsaturated monovinyl monomers, such as styrene, and cured with an optional catalyst to produce crosslinked interpolymers more rapidly than in the prior art. Before curing, the compositions can be combined with flame retardants, reinforcing fillers and/or impact modifiers.

    An article made from at least one network of high strength fibers and a matrix composition that includes a vinyl ester and diallyl phthalate. Preferably, the article is made from at least one prepreg element which includes at least two adjacent layers of the high strength fiber network in the vinyl ester-containing matrix composition. The prepreg element is made by applying a mixture of vinyl ester, diallyl phthalate and a carbon-carbon saturated solvent to the high strength fiber network.

    The present invention relates to resin compositions for radical curing comprising a component (I) containing reactive carbon-carbon unsaturations and a component (II) containing XH-groups, with X not being C or O., which resin compositions (a) are substantially free of photoinitiators; (b.) have an average number of reactive carbon-carbon unsaturations of component (I) equal to or higher than 2; (c) have an average number of XH-groups of component (II) equal to or higher than 2; (d) whereby at least one of the average numbers of (b) and (c) is higher than 2; (e) and at most 5 mol% of the reactive unsaturations is capable of undergoing homopolymerisation; (f) respectively is present in the form of a mono-ene functional alkylene; and (g) the molar ratio of the XH-groups and of the reactive unsaturations is in the range of from 4 : 1 to 1 : 4. The present invention also relates to processes for curing such resin compositions, in particular by cold curing. And finally, the present invention also relates to a new process for the synthesis of Diels-Alder adducts of cyclopentadiene and a resin component containing telechelic carbon-carbon unsaturation. The resin compositions are capable of providing constructive materials with tack-free surfaces by fast, and tunable, radical curing, and without any problems of so-called oxygen inhibition. Suitable applications are in chemical anchoring, roofing, flooring, (re)-lining, SMCs and BMCs.

    Thermally curable resin composition, having shrink-controlled properties and being suitable for use in sheet moulding compounds and bulk moulding compounds (SMCs and BMCs) comprising, inter alia (a) an unsaturated polyester; (b) an alkenyl aromatic monomer; (c) a low profile additive; (d) a peroxide initiator; (e) a thickening agent; (f) fibrous reinforcement material; and optionally one or more components selected from the group of (g) mould release agents; (h) wetting and viscosity reducing agents; and (i) fillers, wherein the composition also comprises a uret dione diisocyanate, in an amount of at least 0,2-1,0% by weight relative to the total weight of components (a), (b) and (c) of the resin composition. The resin compositions according to the invention in particular have a low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC). More particularly, the resin compositions have excellent Class A properties. The present invention also relates to low profile additives (LPAs) wherein a uret dione diisocyanate is chemically attached through one or both of its reactive side-chain isocyanate groups to one or more of the OH-, NH2-, or COOH- groups of a component already having LPA properties. Finally, the present invention relates to low-VOC products and parts produced from the SMCs and BMCs according to the invention.

    Quaternary boron salts are used as initiators of polymerisation in adhesive compositions for bonding low surface energy substrates such as polyolefins. The quaternary boron salts are of the formula I 1 wherein R 1 is C 1 -C 10 alkyl, R 2 , R 3 and R 4 , which may be the same or different, are, C 1 -C 10 alkyl or C 3 -C 10 cycloalkyl, phenyl, or phenyl-substituted C 1 -C 10 alkyl or C 3 -C 10 cycloalkyl, provided that any two of R 1 -R 4 may optionally be part of a carbocyclic ring, and M + is a metal ion or a quaternary ammonium ion. When M + is a quaternary ammonium ion, the initiator may be used in a two-part composition having a (meth)acrylate monomer in both parts and the initiator compound in one part, the two parts being in a weight ratio of about 1:1. Particular examples of initiator compounds include sodium tetraethyl borate, lithium tetraethyl borate, lithium phenyl triethyl borate, tetramethylammonium phenyl triethyl borate, and tetra methyl ammonium phenyl tri-n-butyl borate, the last-mentioned of which is a novel compound.
