    Processes for utilizing various emulsion polymerization procedures for preparing aqueous nanocomposite dispersions are disclosed. The disclosed processes include both in-situ polymerizations in the presence of at least partially exfoliated, lightly modified clays as well as admixtures of polymer dispersions with at least partially exfoliated, lightly modified clay dispersions. The disclosed nanocomposite dispersions are useful for preparing a variety of materials, such as coatings, adhesives, caulks, sealants, plastics additives, and thermoplastic resins. Processes for preparing polymer nanocomposite powders and use of these powders as plastic resin and plastics additives are also disclosed.

    The copolymers contain (1) 20-69.5% by weight of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid; (2) 0.5-25% by weight of monomer of the formula CH2-C(R)-C(O)-O-(CH2CH20)n-RO wherein R is H or CH3, n is at least 2 and R0 is C8-C30 alkyl, alkylaryl or polycyclic alkyl; (3) at least 30% by weight of at least one C1-C4 alkyl acrylate and/or methacrylate and (4) 0-1.0% by weight of polyethylenically unsaturated monomer, the total of (1), (2), (3) and (4) being 100%. Surfactants may be used to enhance the thickening effect of the copolymers. The copolymers, upon at least partial neutralization with alkali, are used to thicken aqueous systems such as paints, cosmetics, food preparations, ionic detergents, dye pastes for textiles, pharmaceuticals and oil well drilling muds.

    Copolymers of monomer as follows: (1) at least 10 weight percent of one or more of the following monomers: methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, acrylic acid, acryloxypropionic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid, citraconic acid and/or crotonic acid; (2) 0.5 to 25 weight percent of one or more of the monomers of the formula: wherein R is alkyl, alkylaryl, and/or polycyclic alkyl groups having 8 to 30 carbon atoms; (3) optionally one or more of the copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers of the formula: wherein (a) Y is H and Z is COOR2, C6H4R3, CN, Cl, CONH4, (b) Y is C,-C4 alkyl and Z is COOR2, C6H4R4, CN, CONH2, or CH=CH; or (c) Y and Z are C1; and R2 is C1-C8 alkyl or C2-C8 hydroxyalkyl or lower alkoxy (C2-Ca)-alkyl; R3 is H, Cl, Br, or C1-C4 alkyl; and R4 is C1-C8 alkyl; and (4) zero to 1.0 weight percent of one or more polyethylenically unsaturated monomers, when at least partially neutralised and solubilised by additions of alkali are effective thickeners for aqueous systems. Surfactants enhance the thickening performance of the partially neutralised copolymers. Typical systems to which this thickening can usefully be applied include paint latices, cosmetics, pigment dispersions, oil well drilling fluids, textile printing pastes, dentifrices, hand lotions, liquid detergents and pharmaceuticals.
