Substitution of benzylic H by the title compound (BTF) gives rise to products with −CH(CF3)2 terminus exclusively; an intermediate benzylic ion pair results from hydride transfer. Instead of ion recombination, proton transfer may be the concluding step generating dehydrogenation products and 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)ethane-1,1-dicarbonitrile.

In the cycloadditions of the title compound BTF to methylated and phenylated butadienes, NMR spectra of adducts allow to draw the demarcation line between [4+2] and [2+2] cycloadditions. 1-Substituted butadienes accept BTF in the direction less hindered by the bulky CF3 groups. In rate comparison with TCNE, BTF shows electronic acceleration and steric deceleration.

Treatment of tetrakis(substituted phosphine)-palladium (in brief PdL4) with C2F3X gave a complex containing (i) 3-membered metalocyclic ring, (ii) perfluorovinyl group or (iii) only X groups depending on the nature of the substituted phosphine. Reaction of Ni(ButNC)4 with (CF3)2CO and with (CF3)2CNH affords (ButNC)2[graphic omitted] (X = O or NH). The same five-membered ring compounds are obtained by treating (ButNC)2[graphic omitted] (X = O or NH), prepared from (1,5-C8H12)[graphic omitted], with the respective ketone or imine.
