Oxidative biaryl couplingreaction of phenol ether derivatives with the hypervalentiodinereagent, phenyliodine(III) bis(trifluoroacetate) (PIFA), in the presence of BF3·Et2O gave a variety of substituted biphenyl and binaphthyl compounds in high yields. Replacement of PIFA with a more practical polymer-supported hypervalentiodinereagent has also been achieved.

An efficient and green oxidativecoupling for the direct construction of polymethoxyphenanthrenerings has been developed, which uses environment-friendly sodium nitrite as catalyst and oxygen as terminal oxidant. This methodology also provides an alternative possibility for forming biaryl products.
