The 2-(furan-2-yl)-3-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-one and their substituted derivatives with electron donating and electron withdrawing groups have been synthesized. Free radical scavenging activity has been studied using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazine (DPPH). The kinetic studies and co-relation of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) with electron donating and electron withdrawing group explains the effect of these groups on percentage scavenging activity.
