  Permethylation of diospyrol was considerably improved in solvent-free PTC conditions. An excellent yield (92%) was obtained in 30 minutes using solid KOH + 5% Aliquat 336 and dimethyl sulfate, to be compared with 40% in acetone in 10 hours.
