  The reaction of 1, 2-dibromo-1, 2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)ethane with alcohols was associated with rearrangement to give the corresponding bis(4-methoxyphenyl)acetals. In boiling ethylene glycol 4,4′-dimethoxy-deoxybenzoin was also obtained due to an aldehyde-ketone rearrangement. 4,4′-Dimethoxybenzophenone was also formed being apparently derived from the acetals.   When chlorinated in chloroform, (E)-stilbenes bearing electron-donor substituents in the para position of the benzene ring give threo-1,2-diaryl-1,2-dichloroethanes, while meta-substituted (E)-stilbenes, predominantly erythro isomers, irrespective of the nature of the substituent. The reactions in acetic acid result in preferential formation of threo-1,2-dichloro- and threo-1-acetoxy-1,2-diaryl-2-chloroethanes.
