methylenecycloalkanes (ring sizes C4 through C7) gave mixtures of chlorohydrins with abnormal orientation predominating with the 4- and 6-membered ring compounds. Addition of HOBr to these olefins gave 1-bromocycloalkylmethanols as the only bromohydrin product. Cycloalkanecarboxaldehyde, in amounts dependent on ring size, accompanied the formation of bromohydrin from olefin oxide and HBr solution.
