  :Alpha-hydroxysulfinates 1 (table 1) are synthetized (path (b), Fig. 1), by slowly adding aldehydes 3 to the mixture sodium dithionite 4 - sodium hydroxide. Owing to their limited stability the products 1 are rapidly separated from sodium sulfite 5 and isolated. They are easily distinguished (table 2) from their oxydation counterparts 2.

  N-methane- or p-toluene-sulfonyl alpha aminosulfinic acids salts 1 (table) are synthetized (Scheme 2; path a), in a Mannich like reaction (Scheme 4), by coupling alpha-hydroxysulfinates 5 with methane- or p-toluene-sulfonamides 6 in an aqueous basic medium. The isolated products are fairly stable.
