  An antimicrobial composition containing, as combined active ingredients, an isothiazolone compound complex of the general formula wherein R¹ is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent hydrocarbyl group, R² and R³ are each independently a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, M is a metal or ammonium cation, X is a complex-forming anion, a is l or 2 and b is an integer which is such that the anion X satisfies the valence of the cation M, and 3,3,4,4-­tetrachlorotetrahydrothiophene l,l-dioxide effectively inhibits the growth of microbes in, for example, industrial water systems for pulp and paper.
