[GRAPHICS]Novel spiroheterocyclic molecules, namely, 2,3-dihydro-2-spiro-7'-[8'-imino-7',8'-dihydronaphthalen-1'-amine]perimidine, PNI, and 2,3-dihydro2-spiro-4'-[8'-aminonaphthalen-1'(4H)-one]perimidine, PNO-p, were obtained by oxidation of 1,8-diaminonaphthalene using manganese dioxide. These molecules exhibit thermally reversible photochromism with good photofatigue resistance, and their photogenerated forms possess broad absorption in the visible region.

The present invention provides a color tone variable film which is formed by a reaction of a cationic polymer containing a structural unit containing a positive ionic group in a side chain and a compound containing an acid group and a partial structure which can change color tone as a result of energy application, which can be formed by a wet method, which has flexibility and strength in practical use, and which changes color tone with high sensitivity as a result of energy application, a simple manufacturing method thereof, and an electrochromic element obtained by the manufacturing method.

The invention provides polymers comprising pendent photochrome or near IR dye groups, as well as polymeric matrices made from these polymers, which can be used as or in association with a medical article. The polymers can be synthesized using methods that facilitate the preparation of medical articles having good biocompatibility. Exemplary polymeric matrices are in the form of lubricious coatings on medical devices, such as catheters. Visualization by irradiation of the photochrome or near IR dye can improve detection of the polymeric matrix on a device or in the body. This, in turn can improve aspects of a medical procedure, such as device insertion or matrix formation, as well as being useful for assessing the quality of the matrix.

The present invention provides methods for detecting electromagnetic energy (e.g., ultraviolet radiation) and articles suitable for use in such methods. The methods and articles can be useful for detecting sterilization or disinfection resulting from electromagnetic energy such as ultraviolet C. Detection of the sterilization or disinfection allows discontinuation of the exposure when a desired level of sterilization or disinfection has been obtained. Feedback mechanisms for controlling exposure to the energy may also be used.
