The present invention discloses a preparation method for 6-chloro-2-trichloromethyl pyridine, in which 2-methyl pyridine hydrochloride or 2-chloromethyl pyridine is used as an initiator and a considerably excess amount of chlorine gas reacts with 2-methyl pyridine hydrochloride or 2-chloromethyl pyridine at a high temperature to form purer 6-chloro-2-trichloromethyl pyridine. The present invention provides a highly selective, high-yield and improved environmental-ly protective method.

A mixture containing 5,6-dichloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine and 3,6-dichloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine enriched in 3,6-dichloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine is obtained by chlorinating 6-chloro-2-trichloromethylpyridine in the vapor phase using a Type L zeolite catalyst.
2,3,5,6-Tetrachloropyridine and pentachloropyridine are prepared by reacting a chlorosubstituted (trichloromethyl) pyridine in the liquid state with chlorine at temperatures of at least about 160°C in the presence of a Lewis acid type catalyst. The products are useful as intermediates for the preparation of herbicides and pesticides.

Pentachloropyridine and polychloro derivatives of 2-(trichloromethyl)pyridine are prepared by reacting 2,4- diohloro-6-(trichloromethyl)pyridine in the liquid state with chlorine at temperatures of at least 160°C in the presence of a Lewis acid type catalyst. The products ara useful as herbicides, pesticides, or as chemical intermediates for the preparation of other products useful, for example, as herbicides or . pesticides.

Halomethyl substituted dialkoxypyridine compounds which correspond to the formula:
wherein X and Y represent an OR', trichloromethyl, trifluoromethyl, dichloromethyl, dichlorofluoromethyl or chlorodifluoromethyl group with the proviso that one of X or Y must be OR' and the other of X and Y is other than OR'; and R and R' each independently represent an alkyl group containing 1 to 12 carbons or an alkenyl group containing 3 or 4 carbon atoms. These compounds and compositions containing them have been found to be useful as agrnomic fungicidies, especially useful and valuable for the control of soil-bome plant disease organisms which attack the root of plants.
