    alpha-Halo and alpha-cyano pyridiniums were found to undergo facile hydrolysis, in contrast to the sluggish reactions of corresponding uracils. The greatly enhanced rates found with pyridinium compounds have indicated a possible source of the rate acceleration seen in the hydrolysis of 6-cyanouridine 5'-monophosphate catalyzed by orotidine 5'-monophosphate decarboxylase.     One aspect of the present invention relates to reactive compositions and methods of use thereof, wherein a metal oxide cluster is used to connect a reactive group (or groups) to the surface of a substrate. In certain embodiments, the reactive group in the compositions decomposes organophosphate agents through nucleophilic hydrolysis. In certain embodiments, the reactive group in the compositions is bactericidal. Remarkably, the use of metal oxide clusters in the disclosed compositions and methods permits incorporation of higher quantities of nucleophilic and bactericidal groups without the difficulties associated with having to pretreat the substrate prior to its association with the reactive groups.

    Olefin polymerization is carried out in the presence of a catalyst comprising, as main components, the following Compounds (A) and (B): (A) a transition metal compound containing a transition metal selected from the IVB Group of the Periodic Table; and (B) a compound capable of forming an ionic complex when reacted with a transition metal compound, wherein at least one of Compounds (A) and (B) is carried on a carrier; and an organoaluminum compound. According to the present invention, an olefin homopolymer or a copolymer of olefins having excellent properties such as high bulk density, can be effectively produced without using a great amount of an organoaluminum compound.

    A catalyst comprising a transition metal compound, such as pentamethylcyclopentadienyltitaniumtrimethyl, and a coordination compound formed between a quaternary ammonium salt and an anion comprising two or more groups bonded to a metal atom, such as O-cyano-N-methylpyridinium tetra(pentafluorophenyl)borate, and another catalyst comprising the above catalyst and an alkylating agent, such as triisobutylaluminum, suitable for the production of a highly syndiotactic styrenic polymer. A process for producing a highly syndiotactic styrenic polymer by polymerizing a styrenic monomer in the presence of the above catalyst. It is thereby possible to produce a highly syndiotactic styrenic polymer efficiently without the necessity for using expensive aluminoxane in a large amount.

    A process for preparing olefinic living polymers having a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of 1 to 1.3, comprising polymerizing an olefinic monomer having 2 to 20 carbon atoms at low temperatures in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) a hafnium or zirconium-containing compound having one or two cyclopentadienyl backbones, (B) a triphenyl boron compound or a tetraphenyl borate compound and optionally (C) a specific mono-, di- or trialkylaluminum compound. When the catalyst comprising the zirconium-containing compound is prepared by further using a titanium-containing compound (D), the polymerization temperature can be raised.
