The genotoxicity of dyes present in colored smoke munitions was studied in vitro. Solvent Red 1 ... /was/ tested for mutagenicity in the Ames/Salmonella assay using strains (TA-1535(, (TA-100), or (TA-98) with or without metabolic activation from aroclor induced rat liver microsomes (S9). In some experiments Solvent Red 1 was reduced by an azo reduction protocol to free some of the amine before testing. The /cmpd/ was tested for cytotoxicity and mutagenicity, ability to induce sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosome aberrations in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Induction of mutations at the CHO hypoxanthine-guanine-phosphoribosyl-transferase locus was used to assess mutagenic activity. ... Solvent Red 1 had /purity/ of 99%. /The cmpd/ was not mutagenic after being reduced to the free amine. SR1 was cytotoxic and significantly incr the SCE frequency in CHO cells. /The cmpd/ was not mutagenic or clastogenic in CHO cells.
