    Molecular Mechanism of Anomalous Increase in the Helical Pitch of Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Induced by Achiral Dopants
    摘要:
    A dopant-induced anomalous increase in the helical pitch of dicholesteryl 10,12-docosadiynedioate 1 is explained by generation of smectic clusters in the cholesteric phase where the dopants act as promoters of smectic domains. The dopants, having a mesogenic core and the proper length of alkyl chains on both their molecular sides, such as 4,4'-dialkylazobenzenes, 4,4'-dialkylazoxybenzenes and 4,4'-dialkylbiphenyls, considerably increase the pitch. However, dopants having benzene or a binaphthyl structure in the molecular center, an alkyl chain at one side of the molecules and Z-isomers of azobenzene and azoxybenzene derivatives, slightly decrease the pitch by acting as impurities that decrease the transition temperature of the host. An X-ray diffraction study of the cholesterics revealed that the pitch increases with an increase in size and amount of the smectic domains induced by the appropriate dopants.

    A facile thiocyanation of 1-alkoxynaphthalene using copper(II) thiocyanate afforded 4-thiocyanato compound. The reaction proceeded at a moderate temperature (80–90 °C) even for 1-alkoxynaphthalene with higher alkyl groups (C6, C8, and C12).

    Methods, compositions and kits are disclosed. The compositions are light emitting and comprise a polymeric matrix having dissolved therein a photoactive compound. The composition has the characteristic that, after activation of the photoactive compound, the rate of decrease in the intensity of light emission at any time during a 20-fold decrease in the intensity is proportional to the intensity of the light emission. In one embodiment the polymeric matrix is comprised of particles of about 20 nm to about 100 μm in diameter to which is bound a specific binding pair member. The particles generally comprise a polymeric matrix having dissolved therein about 1 to about 20% by weight of a dopant. The compositions may be used in methods for determining an analyte. A combination is provided comprising (1) a medium suspected of containing the analyte, (2) and the aforementioned composition. The photoactive substance is activated and the effect of the activating on the optical properties of the combination is detected. The presence and amount of the effect is related to the presence and amount of the analyte in the medium. Also disclosed are kits for use in an assay.
