  N-substituted amidines can be prepared in good yield by heating equimolecular quantities of aryl nitriles and primary amines with AlCl3. Also when a nitrile is kept at room temperature in contact with hydrogen chloride gas in dry ether in the presence of arylamine, amidines may be formed in good yields.
