    In a process where an ortho-alkylnitrobenzene derivative and a vinyl compound as starting materials are used to prepare a 1,5-diaminonaphthalene derivative via a 4-(2-nitrobenzene)propane derivative and a 5-nitro-1-tetralone derivative, the ortho-alkylnitrobenzene derivative and a vinyl compound having an electron withdrawing group such as an acrylonitrile derivative and an acrylate may be reacted in the presence of a base to provide an aromatic nitro compound. An aromatic nitro compound such as 4-(2-nitrobenzene)butanonitrile thus obtained may be cyclized to safely, cost-effectively and selectively provide a 5-nitro-1-tetralone derivative without forming any isomer. Furthermore, from the 5-nitro-1-tetralone derivative, a 1,5-diaminonaphthalene derivative may be prepared without forming any isomer.

    The use of certain prepolymers of 4,4'-methyienebis-(phenyl isocyanate), in place of the latter diisocyanate itself in the preparation of polyurethane-polyureas using aromatic diamine extenders, has a number of advantages par- ticuiariy when the compositions are prepared by reaction injection molding techniques using two streams of reactants. The principal advantages are (i) a useful increase in gel time and (ii) a ratio of amounts of the two reactant streams which more nearly approaches 1:1. This latter factor not only improves the efficiency of mixing of the components in the mixing head but, together with the longer gel time, significantly increases the output of mixed reactants per unit of time. The prepolymers of 4,4'- methyienebis(phenyi isocyanate) employed to achieve the above results are those derived from polyoxy-ethylene polyoxypropylene polyether diols and triols (MW = 1000-10.000), polytetramethylene glycols (MW = 600-5.000) and polyester diols and triols (MW = 500-8.000).

    Polyamide-polyurea containing polymers are disclosed that are derived from the reaction of (A) an organic polyisocyanate: (B) an organic compound having at least two active hydrogen containing groups; and (C) from 15 to 160 parts per 100 parts of said (B) of a chain extender combination comprising (i) a particular enamine and (ii) an aromatic diamine and optionally (iii) an extender diol wherein the ratio of equivalents of (A) to total equivalents of (B) and (C) is within the range of from 0.90:1 to 1.10:1. The polymers find particular utility in the preparation of RIM parts having excellent physical properties. At the same time, the polymers are characterized by slower gel times than prior art aromatic diamine extended polymers thereby allowing the filling of larger molded parts.

    Polyurethane-polyurea polymers are disclosed that are derived from the reaction injection molding of organic polyisocyanates, optional high molecular weight active hydrogen containing compounds and extender mixtures comprising (i) aromatic diamines wherein at least one of the positions ortho to each amine group is substituted by a lower alkyl group and (ii) bis(hydroxyalkyl) cycloalkanes. The improved polymers have excellent resistance to high temperature conditions. Also disclosed are the blends of both the extender mixtures and the latter with the optional high molecular weight active hydrogen containing compounds which are particularly useful for the preparation of the above polymers.
