    High purity amino-1,3-benzenediols are prepared by (a) contacting a 1,3-bis(alkylcarbonato)benzene with a nitrating agent under reaction conditions such that a 1,3-bis(alkylcarbonato)nitrobenzene is formed, (b) con­tacting the 1,3-bis(alkylcarbonato)nitrobenzene with a hydrolyzing agent under conditions such that a nitro­-1,3-benzenediol is produced, and (c) contacting the nitro-1,3-benzenediol with a reducing agent under con­ditions such that an amino-1,3-benzenediol is produced. Of the amino-1,3-benzenediols, 4,6-diamino-1,3-benzene­diol is particularly useful in the preparation of high molecular weight polybenzoxazoles.

    PROBLEMS The present invention relates to a process for producing a polybenzoxazole polymer and provides a process for producing the polybenzoxazole polymer within a short reaction time. MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS A process for producing a polybenzazole polymer comprises producing the polybenzazole polymer in a non-oxidizing dehydrating solvent while employing a compound represented by the following general formula (1) as a raw material including a first polymerization step in which polymerization is performed at a temperature of 150° C. or less and a latter polymerization step in which polymerization is performed at a temperature of 200° C. or more, wherein at least the latter polymerization step is performed in a kneading-type reaction apparatus to complete the polymerization reaction: wherein X represents an O atom, an S atom or an NH group; Ar 1 represents a tetravalent organic group having two or less of benzene rings, naphthalene rings or pyridine rings; Ar 2 represents a bivalent organic group having two or less of benzene rings, naphthalene rings or pyridine rings; both of Ar 1 and Ar 2 may have one or more functional groups such as a methyl group and a hydroxyl group; and R represents H or a univalent organic group with a carbon number of 1 to 6.

    A novel gas separation membrane having excellent gas permeability and gas separation performance, particularly carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) permeability and excellent separation performance of carbon dioxide to methane (CH 4 ) is provided. Moreover, a novel gas separation membrane having excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance and strength etc. is preferably provided. A gas separation membrane comprising a resin comprising a branched polybenzoxazole has excellent gas permeability and gas separation performance, particularly excellent carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) permeability and excellent separation performance of carbon dioxide to methane (CH 4 ). The resin comprising a branched polybenzoxazole preferably has a cross-linked structure. Furthermore, the resin comprising a branched polybenzoxazole is preferably a hybrid with silica.
