Synthesis and reactivity of 1,2 λ5-azaphosphinines

The synthesis of 1,2 lambda(5)-azaphosphinines has been achieved in three steps starting from the readily available 1,2-dihydro-1,2 lambda(3)-azaphosphinines. The oxidation and hydrolysis of 1,2 lambda(5)-azaphosphinines on exposure to air give functionalized phosphine oxides.
1,2-lambda-5-azaphosphinines are prepared from l-t.butyl 1,2-dihydro 1,2-lambda-3-azaphosphinines by methylation on phosphorus atom, thermolysis of the resulting phosphonium salts and treatment with potassium carbonate. The 1,2-lambda-5-azaphosphinines, oxidized on exposure to air give phosphine oxides.
