Fast Photochromic Polymers Carrying [2.2]Paracyclophane-Bridged Imidazole Dimer

The synthesis and photochromic behavior of the fast photochromic polymers carrying [2.2]paracyclophane-bridged imidazole dimer are demonstrated. A significant feature of this synthetic strategy is that we can modify the photochromic properties such as coloration/decoloration rate, coloring, and photosensitivity via the stepwise synthetic approach of the imidazole dimer system. Notably, the photochromic behavior of the polymers is not affected by the environment around the photochromes and copolymerization with other monomers in both solution and film, which cannot be realized in any other conventional photochromic systems. The comparable photochromic behavior of the homopolymers and copolymers in solution and film indicates that the photochromic unit is independent from the local environment, which allows effective molecular design of the photochromic monomer unit to accomplish desired photochromic properties of the polymer.

These highly soluble coordinationcompounds are potential candidates as acceptor solution-processable materials for active layers in organic electronic devices, such as field effect transistors or photovoltaic devices.
A three-component coupling of tetramethylammonium pentacarbonyl(acyl)chromates, aryl iodides, and CO takes place under CO atmosphere in the presence of a catalytic amount of Pd(PPh3)4 to afford the corresponding unsymmetrical α-diketones in good yield. By performing the reaction under argon atmosphere, unsymmetrical ketones are prepared instead of α-diketones.

Provided are: a method for controlling the decoloration reaction rate and color density of a fast light-modulating material to levels suitable for practical use; and a fast light-modulating material having a decoloration reaction rate and a color density which are suitable for practical use. A polymer obtained by polymerizing a paracyclophane-bridged hexaarylbisimidazole compound having a radical-polymerizabkle group, and a copolymer obtained by copolymerizing the compound with a (meth)acrylic acid compound or a sensitizer having a radical-polymerizable group can achieve controlled decoloration reaction rates, photosensitivity and color tones.
