The reaction of 4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one with cyanoacetamide is not confined to a 1 : 1 reaction [which results in formation of 3-cyano-6-methyl-4-phenylpyridin-2(1H)-one]. The reaction of 2 mole equivalents of 4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one with one of cyanoacetamide also takes place, the products being 1-cyano-6-hydroxy-6-methyl-4-methylene-8,9-diphenyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one and 3-cyano-6-methyl-
