    The thermal behaviors of the chelate Ni(iso-Bu2PS2)(2) (I) and the mixed-ligand complexes Ni(2,2'-Bipy)(iso-Bu2PS2)(2) (II) and Ni(Phen)(iso-Bu2PS2)(2) (III) in air are reported. These compounds can pass into the gas phase, as was demonstrated by vacuum sublimation for I and by vacuum distillation for II and III in a gradient furnace. The mass spectra of I-III are presented and discussed. The temperature dependence of the saturation vapor pressure over I and Delta H-T(0) and Delta S-T(0) of evaporation of I determined by the vapor transport method are reported.

    Spectroscopy and kinetics of dithiophosphinate radicals coordinated with dithiophosphinate Ni(II) complex

    The laser flash photolysis was used to study the mechanism of photochromic transformations for solutions of phosphinate disulfide ((S2P(i-Bu)(2))(2) equivalent to (S2PR2)(2)) and Ni(S2P(i-Bu)(2))(2)(Ni(S2PR2)(2)) complex in acetonitrile. Under the excitation of an XeCl excimer laser (308 nm), this system manifests transient absorption in the visible and UV ranges which vanishes over a millisecond time domain. The cycle of phototransformations can be repeated without degradation of the optical spectrum of the solution. The process is initiated by photodissociation of a disulfide molecule into two S-radicals ((S2P)-S-.(i-Bu)(2) equivalent to (S2PR2)-S-.). The radical with a constant of 2.5 x 10(9) M-1 s(-1) enters the coordination sphere of Ni(S2PR2)(2) complex to form the radical complex (R2PS2.)Ni(S2PR2)(2). When analyzing the kinetics of changes in the optical density of transient absorption, it is assumed that coordination of the second radical with a constant of 1.5 x 10(10) M-1 s(-1) results in the formation of the secondary or biradical complex (R2PS2.)(2)Ni(S2PR2)(2). The radical complexes dissociate with a radical escaping from the coordination sphere with rate constants equal to 7.5 x 10(3) s(-1) and 7 x 10(2) s(-1) for mono- and biradical particles, respectively. As a result. the system regains its initial state due to recombination of (S2PR2)-S-. radicals into initial disulfide. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    Ligand exchange of thermochromic, LETC, systems exhibiting a reversible change in absorbance of electromagnetic radiation as the temperature of the system is reversibly changed are described. The described LETC systems include one or more than one transition metal ion, which experiences thermally induced changes in the nature of the complexation or coordination around the transition metal ion(s) and, thereby, the system changes its ability to absorb electromagnetic radiation as the temperature changes. In accordance with certain aspects of the present invention, a thermochromic system is disclosed comprising a transition metal ion and a ligand wherein the ligand comprises a nitrogen-containing five or six membered heterocyclic compound that coordinates through the nitrogen atom to the transition metal ion in a HεMLC formed between the transition metal ion and the ligand. In accordance with other aspects of the present invention, thermochromic systems are disclosed comprising a transition metal ion with particularly useful ligands, such as phosphine compounds, tridentate ligands that coordinate through three nitrogen atoms, bidentate ligands, or ortho hindered pyridine monodentate ligands.

    Diamagnetic [Ni(i-Bu2PS2)(2)] compound (I) in ethanol reacts with 2,2 ' -bipyridine or pyrazine to give the paramagnetic complexes [Ni(2,2 ' -Bipy)(i-Bu2PS2)(2)] (II), [Ni(Pz)(2)(i-Bu2PS2)(2)] (III), and [Ni(Pz)(i-Bu2PS2)(2)](n) (IV) (mu (eff) = 2.91-3.12 mu (B)). Single crystals of II were grown for X-ray diffraction study. The crystals are monoclinic, a = 14.669(3) Angstrom, b = 19.693(4) Angstrom, c = 12.155(2) Angstrom, beta = 107.51(3)degrees, V= 3348(1) Angstrom (3), Z = 4; rho (calcd) = 1.257 g/cm(3), space group P2(1)/c. The structure is built from monomeric molecules. The coordination polyhedron of the Ni atom is a distorted octahedron formed by four S atoms of two bidentate chelating i-BU2PS2- ligands and by two N atoms of bidentate cyclic 2,2 ' -Bipy. Preliminary data for complexes III and IV indicate that they also contain an octahedral NiN2S4 fragment. The structures of complexes I (square planar) and of II-IV (octahedral) were confirmed by data from electron spectroscopy. Electronic absorption spectra were used to determine the rankings of the i-Bu2PS2- ions and Pz on a spectrochemical scale.
