Das neue Verfahren ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man Pyridin-1-oxide der Formel II mit einem aromatischen Carbonsäurechlorid in Gegenwart eines inerten organischen Lösungsmittels und in Gegenwart eines Säureakzeptors bei Temperaturen zwischen -20°C und 200°C umsetzt, darauf gegebenenfalls bei Temperaturen zwischen 70°C und 160°C mit Phosgen oder Thionylchlorid umsetzt und das erhaltene Produkt gegebenenfalls weiter auftrennt. Insbesonders dient das Verfahren zur Herstellung von 2-Chlor-5-methylpyridin, welches als Zwischenprodukt für Pharmazeutika oder für Insektizide eingesetzt werden kann.
