    Preparations of 1-thia-3-azabutatrienium salts 2 from ammonium thiocyanate and α-chlorocarbenium salts 3 of the Vilsmeier-Arnold type, and of the geminal diisothiocyanates 6 are described, α-Chlorocarbenium salts react with potassium cyanate and ketones or tertiary carboxamides to give 2-azaallenium salts 9. A mechanistically interesting reaction of α-chlorocarbenium cations with carbonyl compounds has been observed.

    Polymers of anionically polymerized monomers such as mono-olefins, conjugated dienes, vinyl substituted aromatics, vinyl substituted pyridine, vinyl substituted quinolines, various aldehydes, various epoxides. various oxetanes, various oxygen-containing compounds, and the like are produced and end capped witb a polyisocyanate. or polyisothiocyanate having the formula R(N=C=X)n wherein R is a hydrocarbon, n is 2 or 3, and X is oxygen or sulfur. Such end capped polymers, of course, contain one reacted or connected isocyanate or isothiocyanate group and at least one free isocyanate or isothiocyanate end group, which free end group(s) reacts with an amide to give an imide end group. The imide terminated polymer is then hydrolyzed to form a stable amine terminated polymer. The reaction of the amide compound with the isocyanate(s) or isothiocyanate(s), followed by hydrolysis, results in the replacement of the free isocyanate or isothiocyanate end group(s) with an amine group(s). Thus, the amine terminated polymer contains the polymer connected to an isocyanate or isothiocyanate group (now an amide group or a thioamide group), which in turn is attached to the hydrocarbon portion, that is, the "R" portion of the polyisocyanate, which in turn is connected to the formed amine group. The amine terminated polymers may be stored extended periods of time and then reacted with various polymers, prepolymers, monomers, or various combinations thereof to form various block or graft copolymers. That is, the amine terminated polymer may be subsequently reacted with any amine reactive compound such as diepoxy monomers or an epoxy prepolymer in the presence of known epoxy catalysts to give a blocked epoxy copolymer. Similarly, the amine terminated polymer may be reacted with urea prepolymers or urea-forming monomers to yield a block urea copolymer. Reaction of the amine terminated polymer with urethane polymers, urethane prepolymers, or urethane-forming monomers will yield a urethane block copolymer. Reaction of the amine terminated polymer with urethane-urea prepolymers or urethane-urea forming monomers will yield a urethane-urea block copolymer. Similarly, various dianhydride and diamine monomers may be utilized to form an imide block copolymer.

    The invention provides an albumin-fixed resin comprising a crosslinked water-insoluble resin and albumin chemically bound thereto, said water-insoluble resin being a crosslinked epoxy resin containing 1 to 30 milliequivalents of amino groups and 1 to 50 milliequivalents of hydroxyl groups per gram thereof, said albumin being bound ionically to the amino groups and by hydrogen bonding to the hydroxyl groups, and the amount of said albumin fixed being at least 25% by weight based on the epoxy resin. Also provided is a process for producing the albumin-fixed resin, which process comprises (1) (a) subjecting a polyepoxy compound containing at least two epoxy groups in the molecule, and a polyamine compound containing at least two primary and/or secondary amino groups in the molecule to addition reaction in an inert medium to produce a fully crosslinked resin, or (b) subjecting said polyepoxy and polyamine compounds to addition reaction to produce an incompletely crosslinked pre-polymer, and then reacting the pre-polymer with at least one organic polyisocyanate, organic polyisothiocyanate or organic polycarboxylic acid halide to crosslink the pre-polymer fully, and (2) contacting the resulting crosslinked epoxy resin containing 1 to 30 milliequivalents of amino groups and 1 to 50 milliequivalents of hydroxyl groups per gram thereof intimately with an aqueous solution containing albymin, optionally after partially neutralizing the amino groups of the epoxy resin. The albumin-fixed resin is useful for removing noxious substances capable of binding to albumin, such as bilirubin, from the blood of a warm-blooded animal.

  • Application of ambient temperature cured polymers of prepolymers to a cured elastomer

    A process and composition for applying and bonding an amine curable polymer or prepolymer at ambient temperatures to the surface of a cured elastomer substrate. The elastomer article or substrate is treated with an organic oxidant such as an N-halohydantoin, N-haloamide, or an N-haioimide, for example, the various isomers of mono-, di-, and trichloroisocyanuric acid. A polyisocyanate is applied thereto. A composition of the amine curable polymer or prepolymer is prepared with an amine curing agent. To the curing agent and curable polymer or prepolymer composition is added a polar solvent which is mixed with the resulting blend or mixture and added to the treated elastomer surface; said polymer or prepolymer cures at ambient temperature and becomes bonded to said elastomer. The application is relatively easy, since the entire mixture is a liquid and can be applied in situ. The invention is particularly suitable for repairing various damaged elastomer articles such as tires (especially off-the-road), conveyor belts, hoses, preparation of caulking or sealing compounds, and especially in bonding tire lugs or tire treads to a tire carcass.

    A composition and process for applying and adhering a cured elastomer tread to a cured elastomer article such as a tire at an ambient or a relatively low temperature. The tire is buffed, ground, and otherwise reduced to a suitable depth for the application of the tread thereto. An adhesive system includes a treating agent such as a N-halohydantoin, a N-haloamide, and N-­haloimide, or a N-halosulfonamide, which is applied to the prepared tire surface. The adhesive system also includes an amine curable polymer or prepolymer contain­ing an amine curing agent therein and an optional polar solvent is applied to the treated tire surface and to the elastomeric tire tread. The tire tread is then applied to the prepared tire and cured at a relatively low or ambient temperatures. Various additives can be added to the amine curable polymer or prepolymer and/or treating agent or to the tire and tread surface to im­prove adhesion of the tread to the tire carcass. The invention is suitable for passenger vehicle type tires, off-the-road type tires, and the like.
