  Herbicidal bipyridinium quaternary salt compositions are prepared which are dry, free-flowing, wettable powders. The solid compositions are complexes of the bipyridinium salts and algin and comprise 14-52% by weight of bipyridinium salt, calculated as cation.

  Low-viscosity heteropolysaccharides, viz. xanthan gum and S-194 of viscosity 15 to 100 mPa.s and guar gum of viscosity 15 to 100 mPa.s, the viscosities being measured in 5 wt% aqueous solution on a Brookfield LVT viscometer at 25°C, spindle 2,60 rpm, are novel. They are made by heating a xanthan gum, S-194, or guar gum solution at 48° to 83°C in the presence of 0.05 to 0.25% EDTA, 0.01 to 0.1% ferrous sulfate, and 2-6% hydrogen peroxide. These gums are especially useful in preparing herbicidal compositions and form novel complexes with herbicidal bipyridinium salt by mixing under aqueous conditions and drying.

  A process of preparing a herbicidal emulsion comprising 75 grams per litre or more of a salt of a herbicidal bipyridylium diquaternary cation as an active ingredient comprising as a first step agitating an aqueous solution of a herbicidal bipyridylium diquaternary salt with an oil and a first emulsifier having a low HLB value to give a first emulsion comprising droplets of herbicidal bipyridylium diquaternary salt solution dispersed in a continuous oil phase, and as a second step, agitating the first emulsion with water and a second emulsifier having a high HLB value, to give a second emulsion comprising drops of the first emulsion dispersed in a continuous aqueous phase. The emulsions have a lower oral toxicity than conventional aqueous formulations.
