    The biocatalytic synthesis of phenothiazones and related compounds has been achieved in an aqueous system under mild conditions facilitated by laccase oxidation. It was found that by coupling 2-aminothiophenol directly with 1,4-quinones, the product yields could be significantly increased compared to generating the 1,4-quinones in situ from the corresponding hydroquinones via laccase oxidation.     Lipoxygenase inhibitors are used as cytoprotective active ingredient in producing cytoprotective pharmaceutical compositions. Corresponding cytoprotective pharmaceutical compositions are prepared by incorporating into a pharmaceutical composition a lipoxygenase inhibitor in a cytoprotective active amount. The prepared cytoprotective therapeutic composition may be used to treat or prevent disease states such as erosive gastritis, erosive esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and induced hemorrhagic gastric erosions such as those caused by indomethacin or ethanol. The lipoxygenase inhibitors induce cytoprotection via an unspecified mechanism.

    The present invention relates to electrochromic solutions and devices manufactured therefrom. More precisely, the present invention relates to electrochemichromic compounds and processes for preparing the same. The present invention also relates to electrochemichromic solutions of such compounds, and those devices manufactured with the same, that demonstrate superior responsiveness to those solutions known heretofore when an applied potential is introduced thereto. And, these solutions, when contained within electrochemichromic devices, demonstrate ultraviolet stability, thermal stability and cycle stability. The responsiveness observed in terms of solution coloring with respect to the solutions, and devices containing the same, of the present invention is of a greater rapidity, intensity and uniformity than those electrochemichromic solutions of the prior art. Preparation of these solutions involve the novel process of pre-treating at least one of the electrochemichromic compounds with a redox agent prior to placing it in contact with the other electrochemichromic compound. Moreover, the present invention relates to methods of preparing such novel solutions and processes for using these solutions to provide devices that exhibit and benefit from the aforementioned superior characteristics.

    The present invention relates to electrochromic polymeric solid films, manufacturing electrochromic devices using such solid films and processes for making such solid films and devices. The electrochromic polymeric solid films of the present invention exhibit beneficial properties and characteristics, especially when compared to known electrochromic media. The electrochromic polymeric solid films are transformed in situ from a low viscosity electrochromic monomer composition by exposure to electromagnetic radiation, and in so doing minimum shrinkage occurs. The electrochromic polymeric solid films of the present invention also perform well under prolonged coloration, outdoor weathering and all-climate exposure, and provide an inherent safety aspect not known to electrochromic media heretofore.
