  Phenolic cyan dye-forming couplers of the general formula: wherein X is hydrogen or a coupling-off group and R is a ballast group, are useful in photographic emulsions, matenals and processes. The cyan dyes prepared when such couplers are reacted with oxidized aromatic primary amino colour developing agents such as p-phenylenediamines have little or no absorption in the green region of the spectrum and have relatively pure hues.
