  Novel substituted nitrodiphenyl ethers, herbicidal compositions containing them and the use thereof for combating weeds. Novel compounds are provided which exhibit activity as herbicides for combating weeds. The novel compounds have the formula: wherein X is hydrogen, halo, trihalomethyl, alkyl, cyano or nitro; X' is hydrogen, halo or trifluoromethyl; R and R2 are the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, (C1-C4)alkyl, phenyl and benzyl, the-CR1R2-groups being the same or different when n is > 1; n is an integer of from 1 to 5; andZ is halo, nitro, cyano, trihalomethyl, methylthio, methylsulfinyl, methylsulfonyl, acetyl, phenyl or a heterocyclic group of from 4 to 6 nuclear atoms containing from 1 to 4 of the same or different nuclear heteroatoms selected from nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur.
