Hypobromite degradation of 6′-acetyl papaverine (Ia) yields amongst other substances 6,7-dimethoxy-1-(2′-bromo-3′-oxo-5′,6′-dimethoxy-ind (III) which under various conditions can be reduced to 6,7-dimethoxy-1-(3′-oxo-5′,6′-dimethoxy-indanyl-1′-)isoquinoline (XI), 6,7-dimethoxy-1-( (XII), 6,7-dimethoxy-(5′,6′-dimethoxy-indenyl-1′-)isoquinoline (IV) and 6,7-dimethoxy-(5′,6′-dimethoxy-indanyl-1′-)isoquinoline
