A rapid immunometric assay for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), commonly used for detection of pregnancy in human females, has been developed using a specific wash solution and conjugate level which reduces background and improves sensitivity. The assay can be carried out within two minutes using a microporous membrane to capture the "sandwich" complex of antigen and two antibodies, one of which is located on the membrane. Greater sensitivity at low levels of hCG have been demonstrated so the assay is useful as an early indicator of pregnancy. An immunoreagent composition and test kit are provided for use in the assay.
