Highly efficient interconversion of a range of 1,3-oxathiolanes, 1,3-dithiolanes and 1,3-dithianes to their acetals at ambient temperature using N-bromosuccinimide or N-chlorosuccinimide and different types of alcohols and diols was investigated.

Trichloroisocyanuric acid (1), a cheap industrial chemical, catalyzes mild and efficient thioacetalization and transthioacetalization reactions. In addition, this catalyst is very selective for this purpose.

Thioketals without enolizable hydrogens adjacent to a sulfur atom are converted easily to the corresponding ketones in high yields under similar reaction conditions. However, thioketals with enolizable methyl and methylene groups undergo ring-expansion reactions to afford 1,4-dithiepins and 1,4-dithiins in dry CH(2)Cl(2) at room temperature in good yields.

Thioacetalization of Carbonyl Compounds by Zeolite HSZ-360 as a New, Effective Heterogeneous Catalyst
Thioacetal can be efficiently obtained at room temperature by simply dissolving the appropriate carbonyl compounds and 1,2-ethanedithiol, in dichloromethane, with zeolite HSZ-360 as a new heterogeneous catalyst. Satisfactory to good yields are obtained even with polyfunctionalized substrates.
