Nitroxide radicals 1a–c react with terbutoxy radical to form terbutoxy substitutedradicals 2, 3 and 4. The reaction mechanism is interpreted in terms of homolytic substitution. The terbutoxy substituted nitroxides can be easily oxidized to quinoneimine N-oxides 6, 7, 8 and 9. The interpretation of the evolution of radicals 2, 3 and 4 in the reaction mixture is confirmed by experimental evidence. The
