    A vinyl polymer having a controlled molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution is prepared by polymerizing a vinyl monomer using an organic halide polymerization initiator in the presence of a cuprous compound catalyst in a solvent containing an organic compound having a dielectric constant of at least 10 at 25°C, or by polymerizing a vinyl monomer using an organic halide polymerization initiator in the presence of a cuprous compound catalyst and also a specific 1,10-phenanthroline compound.

    In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a process for producing a polymer by a living radical polymerization method which is also applicable to the polymerization of a methacrylate monomer, and a methacrylate-based polymer having a narrow molecular weight distribution which is produced by the above process. Specifically, the present invention relates to a process for producing a methacrylate-based polymer by a atom transfer radical polymerization method in which a polymerizable monomer containing at least one methacrylate monomer is polymerized in the presence of a redox catalyst comprising a metal complex containing at least one transition metal as a central metal selected from the group consisting of elements of Groups 7 to 11 of the Periodic Table, using an organohalogen compound or a halogenated sulfonyl compound as a polymerization initiator.

    A lubricating oil additive containing at least one acrylic block copolymer having a weight-average molecular weight of 10,000 to 1,000,000 and a molecular weight distribution [ratio of weight-average molecular weight (Mw) to number-average molecular weight (Mn), i.e., Mw/Mn ratio] of 1.5 or below; and lubricating oil compositions containing the additive. The lubricating oil additive exhibits a thickening effect higher than those of conventional acrylic lubricating oil additives and can improve the viscosity index of lubricating oil even when added in a small amount. Further, the additive can also improve the low-temperature characteristics, flow characteristics, and shear stability. The lubricating oil compositions enable energy saving and can lengthen the lifetime of lubricating oil and reduce the load on the global environment.
