We have developed a highlyefficient method for the copper-catalyzed amidation of aldehydes in the presence of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS). This method is simple, economical, and has practical advantages for synthesis of imides.

copper-catalyzed radical-triggered three-component reaction of N-heteroaryl aldehydes, nitriles, and water. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction may undergo a radical-triggered Ritter-type reaction in which water serves as the oxygen source for the formation of the C–O bond. The reaction has advantages such as a broad substrate scope for the N-heteroaryl aldehydes, atom economy, and simple operation.

Compounds, compositions, and methods for modulating processes mediated by Retinoid X Receptors using retinoid-like compounds which have activity selective for members of the subclass of Retinoid X Receptors (RXRs), in preference to members of the subclass of Retinoic Acid Receptors (RARs). Examples of such compounds are bicyclic benzyl, pyridinyl, thiophene, furanyl, and pyrrole derivatives. The disclosed methods employ compounds for modulating processes selectively mediated by Retinoid X Receptors.
