Using diisopinocampheylchloroborane as a chiral Lewis acid catalyst, the Pictet-Spengler reaction of N(b)-hydroxytryptamine with aldehydes gave the corresponding 2-hydroxytetrahydro-beta-carbolines in up to 90% ee.
