An iridium-catalyzed, highly efficient, and site-selective deoxygenation of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols has been realized, under the assistance of a 4-(N-substituted amino)aryl directing group. Only the hydroxyl adjacent to the directing group can be deoxygenated. The deoxygenation is performed in water, with formic acid as both the promoter and hydride donor. this strategy, a wide range of primary, secondary, and aliphatic straight chain alcohols were selectively methylated. This protocol was further employed for the methylation of a few natural products and the gram scale synthesis of β-methylated alcohols. A series of control experiments and kinetic studies were performed to understand the plausible reaction mechanism.

synthesis of all probable products upon varying the reaction conditions is uniquely challenging and exciting to explore. Utilizing methanol, cyclometalated (NNC)Ru(II) complex catalyzed selective transformation of a wide variety of ketones to the corresponding alcohols, β-methylated alcohols, and α-methylated ketones is disclosed. Notably, by changing the reaction parameters, the selective synthesis of all
