A Study on the Antioxidant Activity of Pyridylselenium Compounds and their Slow Release from Poly(acrylamide) Hydrogels

The antioxidant activity of pyridylselenium compounds has been evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and nitric oxide (NO) scavenging methods. Pyridylselenium compounds have shown far superior (100-1000 times) antioxidant property than ebselen. The control release of bis(2-pyridyl) diselenide from poly(acrylamide) hydrogels has been studied in order to evaluate its release mechanism and diffusion coefficient. The later study also demonstrates that the pyridylselenium loading into the polymer matrix increases the magnitude and the rate of the radical scavenging activity of the poly(acrylamide) hydrogels.

A convenient method for the preparation of various methyl substituted 2,2'-dipyridyl diselenides and -ditellurides by the aerial oxidation of lithium 2-pyridylselenolate/tellurolate, prepared from the lithium-halogen exchange between n-butyllithium and 2-bromo methyl substituted pyridines is reported. All the compounds prepared are new and have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1, C-13, Se-11 NMR, and mass spectral studies. Various pyridylseleniums and their hydrochloride salts have been synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial activities. SEM, TEM and enzyme profiling techniques have been used to investigate the mode of action of these compounds as antibiotics. Single crystal X-ray study of bis(3-bromo-2-pyridyl) diselenide (6b) has also been reported. The molecule 6b displays pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking and pi center dot center dot center dot Br secondary interactions leading to a supramolecular self-assembly. A search on Cambridge Structural Database was undertaken to identify the pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions in various other bis(2-pyridyl) diselenides. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.
