    Provided is a solid polymer electrolyte having increased heat resistance and high proton conductivity and a proton conductive membrane composed of the electrolyte. Also provided is a copolymer having a sulfonic acid group. The copolymer includes a repeating unit represented by Formula (1): (in the formula, Y denotes at least one kind of structure selected from the group consisting of —CO—, —SO 2 —, —SO—, —CONH—, —COO—, —(CF 2 ) l — (l is an integer of 1 to 10), and —C(CF 3 ) 2 —; W denotes at least one kind of structure selected from the group consisting of a direct bond, —CO—, —SO 2 —, —SO—, —CONH—, —COO—, —(CF 2 ) l — (l is an integer of 1 to 10), —C(CF 3 ) 2 —, —O—, and —S—; Z denotes a direct bond or at least one kind of structure selected from the group consisting of —(CH 2 ) l —(l is an integer of 1 to 10), —C(CH 3 ) 2 —, —O—, —S—, —CO—, and —SO 2 —; R 30 denotes a nitrogen-containing aromatic ring having a substituent represented by —SO 3 H, —O(CH 2 ) h SO 3 H, or —O(CF 2 ) h SO 3 H (h is an integer of 1 to 12); p is an integer of 0 to 10; q is an integer of 0 to 10; r is an integer of 1 to 5; and k is an integer of 0 to 4).

    Disclosed is an aromatic sulfonic acid ester derivative represented by the formula (1); 1 in the formula, X is an atom or a group selected from a halogen atom excluding fluorine, —OSO 3 CH 3 and —OSO 3 CF 3 , A is a divalent electron attractive group, B is a divalent electron donating group or a direct bonding, R a is a hydrocarbon group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, Ar is an aromatic group having a substituent of —SO 3 R b (wherein R b is a hydrocarbon group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms), m is an integer of 0 to 10, n is an integer of 0 to 10 and k is an integer of 1 to 4. Also disclosed is a process for producing a polyarylene having a sulfonic acid group, which process comprises the steps of coupling polymerization of an aromatic compound containing the derivative of the formula (1), to prepare a polyarylene and hydrolysis of the polyarylene, and which process has high safety and is easily capable of controlling the amount of sulfonoc acid group introduced into a polymer and the introducing position thereof.

    To provide a polymer electrolyte membrane that has excellent proton conductivity even under low-humidification conditions, has excellent mechanical strength and chemical stability, and can achieve high output and excellent physical durability when made into a polymer electrolyte fuel cell. The polymer electrolyte membrane includes a block copolymer containing each one or more of: a segment (A1) containing anionic group; and a segment (A2) not containing an ionic group. The polymer electrolyte membrane forms a co-continuous (M 1 ) or lamellar phase-separated (M 2 ) structure, and gives a crystallization heat quantity of 0.1 J/g or larger determined by differential scanning calorimetry, or a degree of crystallinity of 0.5% or larger determined by wide-angle X-ray diffractometry.

    A monomer containing an electron-withdrawing group and an electron-donative group which can be easily controlled in the upper limit of the amount of a sulfonic acid , which impairs the mechanical properties of a copolymer, and can provide a sulfonated polymer that forms a proton-conductive membrane having a high proton conductivity over a wide temperature range, an excellent mechanical strength and an excellent proton conductivity and showing inhibited swelling in hot water and an aqueous solution of methanol, and a copolymer obtained from the monomer. A monomer containing an electron-withdrawing group and an electron-donative group represented by the following general formula (1) : wherein Y represents a iodine atom, chlorine atom or bromine atom; X represents an electron-withdrawing group; B represents an electron-donative group; and Z represents an aryl group having a specific structure or a monovalent condensed ring hydrocarbon group such as naphthyl group.

The proton conductive resin composition comprises a silica and a proton conductive sulfonated polyarylene. The method for preparing proton conductive resin compositions comprises mixing aggregates of silica powder having an average aggregate diameter of not more than 50 nm with a sulfonated polyarylene.
