A device comprising an organic light emitting device is provided. The device comprises an anode; a cathode; and an organic layer, disposed between the anode and the cathode, comprising a compound having the formula:
wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 may represent mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-substitution;
wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, deuterium, halide, alkyl, cycloalkyl, heteroalkyl, arylalkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, amino, silyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, heteroalkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, heteroaryl, acyl, carbonyl, carboxylic acids, ester, nitrile, isonitrile, sulfanyl, sulfmyl, sulfonyl, phosphino, and combinations thereof;
wherein R1, R2, R3and R4 are optionally fused;
wherein X is selected from the group consisting of CRR', SiRR', C=O, N-R, B-R, O, S, SO, SO2, and Se;
wherein R and R' are independently selected from the group consisting of linear alkyl, branched alkyl, and aryl; and
wherein n = 1 or 2.
The ligands for these novel complexes may be obtained using a new synthetic methodology that utilizes manganese dioxide.
