A process for preparing an α-substituted styrene, such as 2-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-4,4,4-trichloro-1-butene, comprising reacting, in the absence of an added Lewis acid, an α-haloalkylbenzene, such as 3-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-1,1,1,3-tetrachlorobutane, with γ-alumina dried to a moisture content between zero to 12 percent by weight is described herein. The γ-alumina serves to catalyze the dehydro-halogenation of the α-haloalkylbenzene to produce the α-substituted styrene.
