  • Process for the bromination of polystyrenes

    The present process is one for the production of brominated styrene oligomers and polystyrene, preferably what are essentially tribrominated polystyrenes. One preferred embodiment of the process can be summarized as consisting of: 1. dissolving polystyrene having a molecular weight of at least 20,000 in a solvent and 2. reacting the dissolved polystyrene with a stoichiometric excess of bromine chloride over that required for achieving the desired degree of bromination in the presence of up to about 15% by weight of the polystyrene of a Lewis acid catalyst at about 20°C to about 50°C. The dominant substitution pattern in the trihalogenated product is at the 2,4,5 positions, with significantly lesser amounts of other isomers including 2,3,5. There does not appear to be any 2,4,6 substitution. A very small percentage of chlorine is believed to be nuclear bound.

    A resin composition comprising (A) at least one heat-resistant resin, (B) at least one thermoplastic resin, (C) an antimony oxide, (D) at least one bromine-­containing reaction product selected from the group consisting of (1) a compound having a molecular weight of from 1,200 to 6,000 and a bromine content of from 5.0 to 60% by weight which is obtained by reacting a bromine-containing epoxy compound and 1,3,5-­tribromophenol, and (2) a compound obtained by reacting a bromine-containing epoxy compound having an epoxy equivalent of from 450 to 7,000 and a bromine content of from 5.0 to 52% by weight and an acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer having a carboxyl group at the both terminals thereof and a molecular weight of from 1,000 to 10,000, and (E) at least one silicon-containing compound selected from the group consisting of (1) silicone oil, (2) a ladder silicone resin, and (3) an alkoxysilane having a mercapto group, a vinyl group or a methacryloyl group, is disclosed. The resin composition is excellent in heat resistance, impact resistance, flame retardancy, and molding properties.

  • Polymer polyols containing halogenated aromatic monomers

    Novel polymer polyols based on halogenated aromatic monomers such as tribromostyrene give polyurethane foams with improved flame retardant properties. For example, replacing conventional SAN polymer polyols with tribromostyrene (TBS)/acrylonitrile polymer polyols allows the preparation of polyurethane foams passing British Standard 5852, Part 2, Ignition Source 5 Combustion Test and having better ASTM E-906 values without the need for solid fillers such as melamine or aluminum trihydrate, although these and other flame retardant additives may be optionally employed as well. Elimination of these fillers also provides other improvements such as superior strength and better compression set properties. The TBS dispersions may also be used in conjunction with melamine to eliminate the need for liquid fire retardant additives.

    An aromatic polycarbonate-styrene polymer resin composition comprising (A) an aromatic polycarbonate, (B) a specified rubber-modified styrene polymer, and (C) a compatibilizer comprising a copolymer of aromatic vinyl monomers wherein the distribution of the proportions of the comonomer components is so heterogeneous that the copolymer is composed of copolymer molecules having different solubility parameter (SP) values, that the difference in SP value between the copolymer molecule having the largest SP value and the copolymer molecule having the smallest SP value is 0.3-1.0 [(cal/cm3)0.5], and that the average SP value of the copolymer is 10.6-11.0 [(cal/cm3)0.5]. The composition has not only high impact and heat resistances but also high melt fluidity and is useful in the fields of household electric components and OA equipment components.
