  The compound of formula (II): namely (5R, 6S)-3-[2-(Z)-(2-aminoethoxycarbonyl)ethenyl- thio]-6-[(R)-1-hydroxyethyl]-7-oxo-1-azabicyclo[3.2.0]-hept-2- ene-2-carboxylic acid; is useful in the treatment of a bacterial infection in animals and is preferably administered as a pharmaceutical formulation in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The compound may be prepared by, e.g., reaction of the thiol with a compound of formula (V): wherein X is amino or a precursor thereof.
